To determine which version / generation of Mac mini you have, you can.

Now for the next challenge, to network my two computers successfully, although that is something for a different forum. This page helps you to find the right documentation, when you want to install Ubuntu on a Mac mini.
#HOW TO INSTALL UBUNTU ON A MAC G4 SOFTWARE#
In the process I have discovered all sorts of other resources on the web for unsupported Mac hardware and software which I had no idea existed which have really meant the time spent has been worthwhile. Thank you to everyone who contributed to solving my problem on the Open Office forum, I am really grateful for your time and patience.

However there is of course a trade off if I find that the older applications are just too restrictive and inferior, so I might have to upgrade in the future. Since it is slow even with what I have, especially scrolling web pages or anything with lots of graphics, I would not want to make it even slower. I wrongly understood that 10.3.9 was the latest, but what was intended by at least two sources was to propose it rather than 10.4 for my machine, as generally for 10.4 a machine at least twice as fast and with more memory is recommended. I am also happy that there was nothing to stop me using OSX 10.4 on my Mac. Both work fine on all the documents I have tried, so I think I shall keep them both in case one needs to act as a work-around for the other.

Not only do I now have a working copy of OpenOffice (2.1), but also NeoOffice (2.2.6 + Patch 5). Wow! I am happy again, and thanks to you all for your help. In the process I discovered that NeoOffice also won't work with OSX 10.3.9, so I am running out of options.
Incidentally I also discovered that of the browsers still available for OSX 10.3.9, safari 1.3.2 is clearly useless, firefox and opera not much better on various web pages I tried, but Camino 1.6.9 seems quite workable and Mac-friendly, so at last I am able to look up the OO user forum, explore other sources of information etc on this G4 machine rather than my other. In accordance with your suggestions I have also tried getting it to reset the user profile, but the new one it creates is exactly the same and this time contains nothing but the font information, not even reference to Java as when I did this with 2.4.
Installation was successful, but it behaves exactly as 2.4 did: When opening a document of any readable type, or just launching OOo on its own (with X11 running) it initially creates an Open Office menu as if trying to execute an Applescript file, but after a few seconds it disappears again with no trace and no document window. In the meantime, I discovered from that OOo 2.4 won't work with OSX 10.3, so I downloaded OOo 2.2, which is said to be the latest possible. I am confused myself now, as I was told in the local Apple Store that 10.3.9 was the last I could use, in spite of the reference you quote - I think it was because it is an early 400MHz machine (serial CK047HHCK5C), but I am in the process of trying to verify this (before I risk the extra cost to upgrade). Thank you Igusaas for querying whether I could be running 10.4 on my Mac G4. (this may be a 2nd reply, as last one seems to have disappeared). Incidentally when trying to look up NeoOffice, about which I know nothing, using Google with Safari 1.3.2, the latest which seems to install with 10.3.9, Safari crashes moments after showing the (correct) search results - very frustrating, no idea if this is related, but two faults at one time could mean a common cause. However I can't find anything relevant about Java compatibility. Since the only document in the configuration file user profile is Javasettings_MacOSX_PowerPC.xml I am wondering if the Java I have is a later version than OOo 2.4 can cope with - Java was updated for latest together with all the other software updates automatically carried out for the 10.3.9 system earlier today. I have also tried various preferences in X11 with no visible effect. If I say yes to installing fonts already in system, doesn't complete startup if I say no to installing fonts (& fonts folder says no_user_fondu). OOo still opens (for about 5 seconds) then closes itself without opening the document required, or leaving a new document window if none.
I have tried restarting system, renaming user profile to get it to reset and then restarting OOo.
